Dr. William Heim of Hematology and Oncology Associates or Northeastern PA in Dunmore was among the honorees at a sold-out Philadelphia fundraiser.

The event raised $212,000 for Pete’s Sake Cancer Respite Foundation, a non-profit organization that assists adult cancer patients, their caregivers and loved ones, according to a release from Amber Mercadoof the foundation.

As part of the evening, Dr. Heim received one of the first-ever gratitude awards for his commitment to the cancer patient community. Inspired by the late Peter R. Bossow Jr., the foundation gives patients and their loved ones a respite vacation to address the complex emotional, financial, spiritual and psychological needs of the young adult cancer patient population.

Dr. Heim was Pete’s uncle and “played an active role in Pete’s journey and the formation of the foundation,” according to the release.

A graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Dr. Heim completed his fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He sees patients in the office and holds privileges at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Moses Taylor Hospital, Post Acute Medical Hospital, Regional Hospital of Scranton and Allied Services Rehabilitation.

Dr. Heim “has served as lead investigator of many clinical trials for various cancer types and has been published in several medical journals documenting the positive outcomes of these trials. Many of these trials have changed the way we treat cancer patients today,” the release adds.

Patricia Gambino , nurse navigator at Penn Medicine, was also presented with a Gratitude Award at the event. Read full article here.
